John Duguid

John founded Balquhain in 1998 to provide clients in the mid market sector in Canada and internationally with advice on financial strategies for growth, restructuring, and project finance.

Previously he was Senior Vice President with the investment banking division of a United Kingdom based global financial services group. John headed the investment bank's Environmental & Construction Group in North America and in prior roles had business development responsibility within the group's Canadian banking subsidiary for a portfolio of leading Canadian corporations and Government entities. Additionally, he served on the Canadian bank's Management and Risk Management committees.

As head of the corporate finance practice, John utilizes his extensive industry and financial services expertise and his colleagues to advise and guide clients on capital structuring, M&A, acquisition finance and project finance. He also sources the funding that may be required by those clients in order to achieve their objectives.



Jason Fielden

Principal - Mergers & Acquisitions

Jason has been providing premium transaction advisory and support services in the mid-markets since 2006. From 2001-2006, he was with Scotia Capital, the corporate and investment banking arm of Scotiabank. Jason worked on many high profile transactions during his tenure. From 1997 to 2001, he worked as a mechanical engineer and project manager in the petrochemical, high energy physics and telecommunications industries.

Jason’s expertise includes transaction strategy, pre-deal analysis, risk analysis, controlled auction process, marketing documents, negotiation, structuring, valuation/pricing, and full transaction support services including our unique Adaptive Due Diligence Program.

Jason has a Mechanical Engineering degree from the University of Saskatchewan (distinction) and an MBA from Queen's University (finance) where he won the Queen's Gold Medal.

Craig Gauld

Craig combines over 25 years of business, legal and administration experience in private and public companies in the software, automotive and biotechnology sectors, nationally and internationally. His areas of business expertise include start-ups, joint ventures, strategic partnerships, financings, private and public share offerings, administration, government grants, international tax structures, strategic planning and strategic negotiating.

Craig earned a B.Sc. in Physics and a Bachelor of Laws degree from the University of Western Ontario. Craig’s experience of many facets of law (including business, contract, corporate, intellectual property, securities, technology, employment and labour and regulatory compliance) together with his entrepreneurial business experiences are applied towards assisting clients successfully grow their own businesses.

Rod Howland

Principal - Business Finance

Rod is a Senior Business Advisor specializing in debt and equity financing for growing companies. He helps his clients’ gain a competitive advantage by arranging financing that is tailored to the particular needs of the company. Rod draws on his extensive experience in banking, investment banking, venture capital and consulting to help clients overcome the challenges they face when trying to arrange financing for their businesses. He has particular expertise in helping companies develop appropriate financing strategies and preparing business plans.

In the course of his career Rod has served as Vice President Corporate Banking for a major chartered bank and held similar positions with a term lender, an investment dealer and a venture capital firm. Rod has financed the debt and equity requirements of both large and small companies in a wide range of industries including manufacturing, distribution, real estate and technology intensive businesses. He has also served as a member of the investment committee of a Toronto based mezzanine fund and as a director of both public and private companies.

Rod earned his degree in business administration from George Washington University, and is a member of the Association For Corporate Growth and the Canadian Association of Management Consultants.
